Well behaved and Monarda are not words that always appear in the same sentence. Many Monarda, despite their marvelous ability to bloom heavily in a huge variety of conditions and to attract butterflies and hummingbirds at prodigious rates, can be unsightly space hogs in the garden despite their numerous stellar traits. With its short, dense, thick form, ‘Fireball’ presents a much better garden presence that is easy to use and admire in the landscape without sacrificing one bit when it comes to blooming and critter attracting. This plant’s upright stems covered tightly with fragrant leaves combine to make a beefy mound that is topped by numerous flower buds as summer starts. Throughout July and August, ‘Fireball’ is awash in ruby red color as 2 lipped, tubular, individual flowers form globular heads of bloom that those butterflies and hummingbirds will be helpless to resist. ‘Fireball’ grows best in a sunny or partially sunny spot with moist soils and good air movement to help prevent powdery mildew. Plant some in a group and watch the well behaved fireworks in your summer garden!
