Definitely one of the most colorful and unusual of the Fiveleaf Akebias, ‘Silver Bells’ has white bell shaped flowers that open in late spring to reveal deep purple flower interiors. Occasionally, female flowers are also present on the vine with a completely different appearance as a dull rose to purple, star shaped flower. All flowers, whether male or female, have a delicious vanilla scent and occasional bizarre looking five-inch long pink or blue skinned fruit. For pollination and fruit, plant two varieties of Akebia. Provide a strong wooded structure for this plant to climb on or let it cascade along the ground for a billowing, fine textured groundcover that will tolerate hard pruning well. As an added bonus, new growth emerges with tinge of purple and fades to bluish-green completing the picture on this highly unique, highly decorative vine.
