Addressing Winter Damage
Back in the garden and noticing plants with stripped leaves, browning, and other issues? You’re not alone! We are seeing a lot of damage due to the heavy snow this past winter, especially on our evergreens.

WHAT TO DO:

Determine what is dead vs. damaged. Dry, crunchy brown leaves and stems will not recover and should be pruned off. If you have areas like those in the photo above, be patient! Browning leaves on more flexible stems will flush new growth if given the chance.
Fertilize: Now is a great time to use Holly Tone (for acid-loving plants like azaleas, rhododendrons, blueberries, and hydrangeas) or Plant Tone (for all flowers, vegetables, trees, and shrubs) and Van Wilgen’s All-Purpose Slow-Release fertilizer! These will provide the nutrients your plants need to flush out and recover from winter stress.
Patience is key: Remember that due to the cold weather, we are around 2-3 weeks behind a typical spring season. This means that a lot of plants may not have flushed out yet. Give them some extra time before assuming they aren’t coming back!
