Common as either a single stem or multi-stem tree, Parrotia can add some unique beauty to the landscape with its many cool features. Its early bloom time offers a great way to start off the season with petalless flowers surrounded by brown bracts and loaded with red stamens that bloom in late March giving a subtle yet effective show. Big, oblong leaves emerge after bloom with a distinct purplish-red tinge that is quite showy. This color morphs to a deep, lustrous green as the foliage matures filling this selection’s dense, rounded, low branching form. In fall, its great looking foliage displays a colorful parade of yellow, orange and red shades making it a classic fall color tree while winter sees an even more interesting revelation of bark that shows patches of green, white and tan against the prevailing gray and white of the season. Perfect as a small specimen, Parrotia is easy to grow plant and loves full sun.
