Spartan Apple

Spartan Apple

Edibles

(Semi-Dwarf) Sporting the deepest of dark red skin with pure white flesh, this pristine Apple performs extrememly well as a high quality dessert fruit very similar to ‘McIntosh’ except it is longer keeping. ‘Spartan’ is actually a cross between ‘McIntosh’ and ‘Newtown Pippen’ and was introduced in 1936 from Sommerland, BC so you know it has the ability to thrive in northern climes! A self-fruiting Apple, “Spartan’ does not need another variety for cross pollination but you can expect bigger crops if you plant it near ‘Lodi’ or another early blooming Apple. The fruit is crisp, juicy and highly aromatic and is a favorite for eating fresh off the tree although it is superb when used in sauces or baking. Resistance to scab, mildew and fireblight makes ‘Spartan’ an edible gardener’s dream Apple. Even better, it is as easy as any Apple to maintain, is heavy-bearing, beautifully decorative with its late April to early May bloom, and very winter hardy!
